The light lab is an educational opportunity offered by Foglantern Theatrical which gives students the chance to experiment with actual theatrical lighting concepts, but on a smaller, more manageable scale.
The light lab is a scaled down, portable, low wattage, theatrical light simulator that can be set up in almost any location with 3 to 4 household 120v circuits.
The light lab is very portable, and can be easily moved and used in different locations in a day's time. The light lab's portability, however, does not sacrifice functionality. In fact, this same light lab setup has been used for actual small venue performances with great success.
The light lab can also turn any room into a beautiful performance space for impromptu theatrical inspiration, or even guerrilla theatre street performances if one is so bold. Fixtures, dimmers and DMX control from the Light Lab have also been used to add excitement to private parties!
The light lab constists of a plethora of low wattage fixtures and a number of actual theatrical lights that are set up in a similar (but smaller) method one would use in an actual theatrical light hang and focus. The fixtures are plugged into portable dimmers complete with DMX control and connected to a lighting console software on a PC, and there you have it!
Students then have the opportunity to experiment with focus angles, light and shadow, shutter cuts and gobos, back light, front light, side lights, up lights, down lights and even practicals! It incorporates all the same lighting features of a real theatre lighting setup, but on a smaller, more manageable scale for the classroom or small venue!
A teaching and practical set of tools all in one portable package! The Light Lab has been used for Theatrical Lighting Education classes at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, UT.
